Cycling

I have been photographing bike races since college and my days with the Texas A&M Cycling team. The sport of cycling brings about so many emotions and I always strive to capture those moments. The joy of crossing the finish line first along with the feeling of getting pipped during the sprint. If you see me on the side of the road, you better bring your A-game. I want to see some suffering!

Ironman Texas - Finish

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

Let me preface this race report with that I did not train for Ironman Texas. Yes, you read that right. My program was going very well in January and into February. Around that time my girlfriend, also training for IMTX, went down with a knee injury. After a few weeks rest, tests came back that she couldn’t race IMTX without doing major harm to her knee and leg. I felt terrible for her and pretty much stopped training in February. I have this wonderful character trait of empathy even if it’s to the detriment of my own causes. Stupid I know, but it is what it is.

Essentially my training after that point was the Tall Texan 70.3 on March 25th, the Got 112? ride on April 14th and the CB&I sprint triathlon on May 4th. I sprinkled in a few runs here and there, but none more than an hour of running. At this point I’ve become curious if one can finish an Ironman on minimal training. I felt confident I could do it due to my endurance background and knowing fully well that it would be a very, very long day. Read more »

Erik Noren of Peacock Groove showcased his rendition of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead 2 on one of his bikes. Complete with a chainsaw chain and frame covered with blood. It's been a blast having him as a booth neighbor at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.

A long stretch of road leads us toward Independence on our annual MLK Century with the Texas A&M Cycling Team. I finished with 113 miles and burned 3144 kJ.

View GalleryOn Sunday I shot my first cyclocross race at Eleanor Tinsley Park in Houston, Texas. Cross racing is always fun to watch, but I really enjoyed photographing the riders biking and running up the hills while trying to navigate through the sandpit. Many thanks to Saint Arnold beer and their Christmas brew for helping provide a great race atmosphere. I hope to get out to more cyclocross races when the chance arises.
